You've probably heard this somewhere else already - but this is big news - perhaps the biggest news in the  geek universe for a long time! So I was wondering if anyone had any views on this?

I've already shown my enthusiasm for a new Star Wars installment:

... but I didn't guess that the guy who's behind the Star Trek re-boot would also get his hands on Star Wars! How lucky can one guy be!? (hears voice in head "in my experience there's no such thing as luck" - ok, thanks Obi-Wan,!)

More on this story here: [link]

...hopefully an official announcement soon.

That's probably a good sign of JJ's directing talent - because I'm guessing they were hoping to appeal to a wider audience when they signed him up for the Trek movies - and it sounds like 'job done' from your point of view. I guess his signing on to Star Wars is just another piece of the puzzle in place... now the rumors can really start!

Can't lie, I'm kind of disappointed...Star Trek 09 was very forgettable, designed as a product for people to consume and then move on. Patronizing at parts, too.

And like everyone's pointing out, the lens flare. Oh God the lens flare. Lightsabers are going to be hilarious.

I do know what you mean (although it was Star Trek 10 that he directed). I've got it on DVD - I watched it... once... I liked it, but I've still only watched it once!
But I think he's up to the task if Super 8 was anything to go on.

Heh, I meant 09 as in the year. :p I can see how that might have been confusing.

I really hope you're right, I'm just not getting my hopes up.

Damn! Looks like you beat me on making a Journal Entry about this!

Man this is gonna be great. I can't think of one bad movie that was made by JJ Abrams. The most recent movie from JJ was Super 8, which was fan-flipping-fantastic. ;)

 and i don't even do many journal entries - but this was such big news I had to get typing right away to hear what people on here think.

I totally agree with you about Super 8 - it proved he could do a movie with 'heart' and was very 'Speilberg-esque'

Agreed! Only down fall is having to wait another 2 years until this movie comes out. :(

I don't know. It isn't confirmed yet, so I'm not holding my breath, but it is an interesting possibility.

That being said, I think I'd like Abrams' direction. His work with Star Trek was spectacular, and if he could maintain action as well as character development, then the new SW movie will be awesome.

I still don't think it's official - although it does seem to be everywhere on the net now?

I do agree with you about his direction - although he's actually directed remarkably few movies. I think Super 8 was his best so far and it's probably the one that got him the job - if/when it's confirmed...
