Here's my idea for a Manga/Anime version of Star Wars.
There was a Star Wars Manga adaptation published in the late '90s - but I wanted my version to look a little 'leaner' - more like the style used for the 'Battle of the Planets' (aka Gatchaman) cartoon or the Studio Ghibli movies.
My aim was to capture a cartoon feel but to also paint realistic textures and detail. I also intentionally gave the characters a stylised look. It was a challenge to get the balance right - but the end result is exactly what I wanted.
This is an entirely original depiction of George Lucas's characters. First drawn in pencil, then inked, scanned and coloured in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. The original is much higher resolution and is over 300mb!
Thanks very much - and yes Tarkin's definitely the 'main' villain in my eyes - why else would they have gone to the trouble and expense to get an actor who at that time was more famous than any of the others (except Sir Alec Guinness). And I just thought that his character and look would lend itself perfectly to the manga style - where older characters are often drawn to look very creepy and sinister!
Well the studio needed a few big names for the film to make it marketable. He is one of those underrated villains.Even though Vader is awesome hes a tragic hero not a villain so Im tired of people calling him the villain. Tarken blew up a planet! If thats not evil then I do not know what is. And yes you got the creepiness down which is perfect since Cushing was a horror film actor.
Well for a while i thought anime looked a little creepy. (im a bigger fan of american animation.) but after a while i started getting used to it, so since that comment i kinda like anime a bit more now.
A lot of anime can be very creepy - even disturbing - so you're right to be cautious! But it is very varied - in Japan comics and cartoons are used to present a wide range of stories - much more so than in the 'west'. If you haven't seen any yet - perhaps look out for stuff by Studio Ghibli - they make consistently amazing stuff!
