I don't make a habit of uploading scraps, or work in progress - but I thought that some of you might find it interesting or maybe even useful to see how I work through a piece.
This shows you some of the key steps of how I worked on my 'Rise of the Empire' piece:
First of all, I start by roughing out some 'thumbnail' sketches to get an idea of which characters I'll use and how they'll fit in to the composition. At this stage there's no detail - just rough shapes - and it's usually helpful to draw these sketches in a small scale (hence the name "thumbnail") as you're just exploring how the image will fill the page/screen.
Then, when I have a composition I like, I refine the sketch into a finished pencil drawing (the top left image). I keep the pencils fairly 'loose' - as I know I can work on the detail later in the colouring stage.
To help me pick out my finished line work I sometimes go over my pencil work in ink (the top right image) - although this isn't necessary if you have nice, clear pencil lines.
Then I scan the picture in and start to work out what colour-scheme I want to use (the bottom left image). Here I've used 'layers' so that I can roughly paint in a background colour to see how it will contrast with the colours I'll use for the characters. I can also start to lay down the base colours for the characters in the picture (I'll usually draw each character on a seperate layer). As I work on the picture I might also make changes to the composition - and you'll see here that the main thing I changed was to increase the size of the two (blue) guards which I'd initially drawn as characters in the background.
When the picture is almost complete (the bottom right image) - there's still time for some final tweaks. Here, most notably, I made the Sith characters more transparent and added colour accents to the Clone Troopers so that they tied in with the overall colour-scheme.
Hope that gives you some ideas or tips for your own pictures!
Yes when i color manga pages i do a similar thing. But my difficult is to choose the color and create a realistic effect of overlay of colours. Good Work!
I liked how you included Palpatines 2 Chanlor Guards in the pic as well as the city-scape behind the group. It adds to the feeling of total controal that ole Palpatine had over everything! The only thing I would think cooler would be the freshly dubed sith Young Skywalker aka Lord Vader [pre-armor] with th yellow eyes leading the pack insted of Fett.
Thanks for the comment - and for taking the time to give me some constructive feedback... which I really appreciate. There's a lot of choices I could have made differently in this and I definitely see what you're saying about having Young Skywalker in this... that would probably have added some 'drama' - but my thinking was that putting Fett in front is kind of symbolic - as he's the template for the clones. Maybe I'll have a go at drawing Skywalker in a future pic.
You know what? I wasn't even thinking about Fett being the "fater" of all clones when I saw that picture untill your reply! I get your choice now. Before I was just seeing it from a "Sith" past/present/future point of view. With Palpatine in the background, Vader to one side, Maul to the other, I was thinking young Skywalker fresly dubed a Sith and off with the 501st to take the Jedi Temple. Now I see the influance of the Sith in the background with and army of cloned killers running out front!
The best thing is that you've thought up all these different scenarios and alternatives for this picture - when I was just trying to draw some cool costumes! I love the fact that this really seemed to tweak your imagination. The power of art...!
What is it that the old school poets used to say, "..art, music, and math bring us together; despots, dictators, and tyrants tear us apart..." or something along those words. I'm just glad that there are artist like yourself that are willing to have an open ear to hear what a watcher has to say and takes the time to respond when possible letting his watcher know "I see you point. or "Oh, I was meaning this with the picture..." vs total silence like there is from some out there. You keep postin the art and I will keep digging it and using my imigination!
